Overview Six Degrees of Separation by John Guare Essay

In the play, Six Degrees of Separation by John Guare, a young black man named Paul convinces wealthy New York families that he is the son of a famous black actor named Sidney Poitier. He also tells them that he goes to Harvard with their children so they would fully accept him and provide the shelter he needs, instead of stereotyping him as a black American who would called a criminal or drug addict. Behind his false identity Paul is a con man who has learned the ways to con wealthy New York families. His former lover Trent Conway is a former classmate of the wealthy families’ children. Trent taught Paul how to talk like a rich person, how to act like one, and all the information he needed to be accepted into their circle. Paul then uses†¦show more content†¦Very protected. Paul is then asked to talk about his father, he says â€Å"My father, being an actor, has no real identity†¦Out on the forest, back to the church†¦ And my father is in tears and I say pop, this is not a real event, this is some script that was sent to you. And my father says I’m trying it out to see how it fits on me. But he has no life—he has no memory—only the scripts producers send him in the mail through his agents. That’s his past† (30). Paul talks about his imaginary father as if he is describing himself as an actor with no real identity, who is a lifeless being with no memory and only the personas he has created for himself. Paul who creates multiple personas to satisfy himself to become part of the upper class society, he goes to extreme extents to lie his way up. Paul who is in his new persona at the Kittredge’s house then talks about identity in the book Catcher in the Rye. When the mother reached her, the woman held her hand out to the child. On the other hand, there was a big contrast between the mother and Vicente in the way that they were described. Vicente was described more feminine and gentler than the mother in the first part of the story. †¦his voice soft, his manners†¦slow. He retained being lower or inferior than the mother throughout the story especially when she started to slap him repetitively. He made no resistance, offered no defense. The judgment of the two completely diverse characters in the story obviously shows the twofold antagonism not only with their gender but also with their major individuality. The woman seemed to be more masculine and more antagonistic than Vicente and even through the sheer differences in their descriptions. We acquire a good judgment that the mother is more powerful than him divergent to common prejudices that man must be more authoritative than women. The author has somehow exhibited omniscient point of view because she sees the happenings, knows everything, and tells what the story is suppose to be. More-over, it is in a context-based interpretation since the text itself or the reader can inform context-based interpretation. The reader could remark that it has a feminist criticism since it includes issues about child and woman abuse and how Vicente has underestimated the power of a woman and a mother. The story also shows a feminist criticism when the mother protected her child from Vicente through slapping his face until he was sent out from their house and sturdily asked him to never come back. For the theme of the short story, she went against the misapprehension that men are more powerful than women and the mother in the story was not afraid instead, she gathered all her might, slapped Vicente repetitively and drove him away from their house. She did not only prove her greatness as a mother but also as a woman.

Cheating essays As far as I can remember, the first time I experienced cheating was in my tenth grade history class. This seems like a rather long time to go in school without experiencing any cheating, but the work we were given before this point wasnt very challenging, so there never was a reason to cheat. Im sure there had been a time or two before then, but this is one time that really sticks out in my memory. The first time I experienced cheating was during finals week in the tenth grade. I had a world history exam coming up, which was going to be very hard. It was made up of one hundred multiple-choice questions. The good part was that it was multiple-choice. On the other hand, there were one hundred questions. The school day started off normal. I got to school and went to my two classes in the morning. Then, it was time for lunch. As I was sitting in lunch, I noticed a paper was being passed around the table I was sitting at. Many of the people I sat with at lunch were also in my history class. Finally, the paper I was wondering about worked its way down to me. I looked at it for a second and realized that it contained every answer to our upcoming history final. Everyone else had already made his or her own copy, so I wasnt going to be left out. I can remember being a little skeptical at first. I wondered if this was going to be the exact test we were taking, or if it was alter ed for someone else. Then, I remembered that our teacher had only given one version of the tests we had taken in the past. I also found out that the only reason we had a copy of the exam was that one of my friends took the exam this morning because he was leaving school early. In turn, I started copying the answers realizing that this was a perfect chance to solidify an A on my report card. I then began the process of trying to memorize all one hundred answers. Soon after, Apple, as one of Motorola's largest customers of desktop class microprocessors, asked Motorola o join the discussions because of their long relationship, their more extensive experience with manufacturing high-volume microprocessors than IBM and to serve as a second source for the microprocessors. This three way collaboration became known as AIM alliance, for Apple, IBM, Motorola. In 1991, the PowerPC was just one facet of a larger alliance between these three companies. A lease (Jeffrey) gives the lessee (Peter) exclusive possession of property for a specific period of time which in this case is five years in exchange for payment or rent. Of important note is that, a lease can be registered on the title, for a set period.2 This gives the right to sublet, assign or sell unexpired portion with th e landlord’s consent, right to exclusive possession, over and above, the right to sue in case of trespass. I would want to start my retail business operations with a POS tracking system that would allow the changes of various nature when I started to expand my business operations. Of the two tracking systems discussed in this report, Retail Pro and MicroStrategy Business Intelligence Software, the system I feel would be the best fit would be Retail Pro because of the versatility of the Business Intelligence features the software includes.Retail Pro has the capability of customizing the system of operations to accommodate the complexity of each product label group as expansion is implemented. My business level of operations is definitely one that does not resemble what would be considered a traditional retail system o f operations because each product label is considered to be a separate unit of business to start. Relationship of Othello and Desdemona Essay

Write a critical analysis of the relationship of Othello and Desdemona in Shakespeare`s tragedy Othello. Pay special attention to the interracial character of this relationship and the use of racist stereotypes in the play. The contrast between The Moor Othello and the gentle Desdemona in Shakespeare`s tragedy Othello is noteworthy. Yet initially it looks like one complements the other: â€Å"She loved me for the dangers that I had passed. And I loved her for that she did pity them.†( Act. 1 Scene 3). But is not this precisely the weak link in their relationship? So in love, so fascinated by the pure nature of Desdemona, does Othello has these feelings over her true self, or because of her tribute to him? Even though he is widely respected general, he’s a man and the need for him to be honored by a woman is in men’s inwardness. It can be claimed that he might even needs her worship more, because, although he is considered as a noble man in times when minorities are almost trampled, his race and the perception that he is lower than his wife are still his biggest insecurities. Attitude towards Othello constantly changes. At one time honored, then considered worst, later far more fair than black. In a moment more than just a Moor, but then again a devil black. These varieties are born not only by his race, but also his devotion to Desdemona, so beautiful and just as devastating. Their relationship is unstable from the start. It became possible because she betrays her father. And that very same act of betrayal, made in the name of love, later feeds Othello`s fears and the conceived doubts in his mind about the purity of Desdemona. Unlike her husband, Brabantio`s daughter has a very calm temper. Her character is not that deep, as others, but she is still the object of the affections of the men in the play. She is intelligible, kind hearted and faithful to the end. Racism in the play shows up early when Othello is compared with a black ram: â€Å"an old black ram is topping your white ewe† (Act. 1 Scene 1). It is unacceptable for a young white woman to be with an older black man. Barbantio claims that only witchcraft can make his daughter, a spirit so still and quiet, to fall in love of what she fear to look on. This refers to Othello, who, is now not seen as the man who was loved by Brabantio. He is  now The Moor, who abused Desdemona and has stolen her from her father and her possible future with a wealthy white man. His love is not approved immediately, because he is not what is expected from Desdemona to be married to. Her father rejects him, with prejudice on his race, and with fear about losing his good name in society. But others seem to look beyond the obvious and see the love of the married couple and the goodness in Othello`s heart. On the one hand discriminated, on the other well accepted, The Moor is now not just a moor, not just a general; he is husband, respected by his wife and the majority. He supports this impression, until his jealousy obsesses him and leads him to the most tragic display of it. And that is when his African origin turns against him one more time and he`s compared to a black devil, black fool, dull moor. Othello`s dark skin match his dark deed, and reflects on other`s opinion of him. Two people in love, each completes the other. That is how Desdemona and Othello, together, look at first sight. He has unruly temper, and she is calm; she is compassionate, he needs this; she adores him, and so does he adore her. Both with such passion for each other. But The Moor`s insecurity outgrows everything. His lack of trust and his dubiety crush his common sense and Iago sows the seed of jealousy and suspicion so easily. By telling Othello that it is women`s nature to fornicate and deceive, Iago reminds him about Desdemona`s choice to elope with him, despite her father`s resentment and against his will. She marries The Moor secretly without her father`s knowledge, and instead of seeing her decision as a sign of her loyalty for him, her husband sees Desdemona`s willingness to elope as a prelude to her infidelity. Brabantio`s words â€Å"she has deceived her father, and so may thee† ( Act.1 Scene 3) pursue Othello`s mind, not letting him to shake off the feeling of doubt when he reminds to himself his own words â€Å"My life upon her faith†(Act. 1 Scene 3). Nevertheless Othello never stops loving Desdemona, nor she stops loving and supporting him, even when he is far more different than a trusting, gentle husband. Yet the destruction of their initial idyll is inevitable. Because Iago only affects Othello`s jealousy, not creating it. The Moor`s doubts, sooner or later would have come to light, with or without Iago`s evil plan. And then the fate of this marriage, this love would still be uneasy. The young beauty Desdemona is adored by several men in the play. So calm person she is, but is the one that causes such rage, resentment and jealousy among those men. Ironically, the man with whom she is suspected of adultery does not fell like that for her. Although she appears as the unit of friction and suspicions in the tragedy, she is one of the most moderate characters. No one else has thoughts that pure and intentioned. But that does not appear as something good for her, because even her good intentions to help, enrage Othello more and he gets even more suspicious. But this does not change her feeling to her beloved. She constantly tries to convince him he`s the one. Even before her death she does not blame him for what he is about to do. Instead she tries to find where she went wrong. Desdemona stays faithful and true to love till she dies. Her blind faith in the honesty and goodness in people, turns out to be one of the reasons for her disastrous destiny. With her righteous heart and her tragic fate, Desdemona is a good example of the proverb: â€Å"Bad things happen to good people.† It seems like the relationship of Othello and Desdemona was never meant to last, but even for a short term of time it was embraced with searing love, that filled their hearts with sweetness, bliss and fervor. Sad, indeed, but beautiful, how the only thing that could devastate their bond was their burning love and the consequences of it.

In life we make choices and all of these choices reflect our future, we have to learn how to put what we need in front of what is wanted. Prioritizing is something that is very important, you have to know what to put first and in order, to accomplish important tasks. For instance, me doing my work s soon as I get it instead of doing other stuff is showing prioritizing the right way. Putting my family’s needs first before buying me things I want. Using priorities the right way helped me accomplish goals quick, and better inside. Persisting is something I use and put effort in. If I keep trying, eventually I will overcome the obstacles. Even if I don’t accomplish at least I know I was persistent enough and tried. Never give up because you never know where you will make it in any situation. One time I was digging holes for my flowers. I got hot and sweaty and tired, despite them. I keep trying and eventually I had a garden full of beautiful flowers. Good things come to those who is persist through the difficulties, and never get discouraged. Being able to focus helps me out while I’m in class. Sometimes I lose focus when I don’t get enough sleep the night before. Also I lose focus when I have my phone on me.

These questions form the core of nursing in my opinion. All of this can sometimes be difficult for nurses. In the workaday environment of a hospital, practitioners too often â€Å"glaze over† or become somewhat automatic. Everyday routine can sometimes numb them to their surroundings, making it difficult to connect with patients that require special attention. It is not hard to imagine the situation: nurses are human just like the rest of us—the fact that there are terrible suffering and pain all around them is something they will eventually adapt to after a certain amount of time. Patients who come into a hospital have many fears and anxieties about their experience: just how sick are they? What do all these new confusing words mean? How will their problem affect the quality of their lives? It can be very difficult to cope. For nurses who have seen it a ll before it can be difficult for them to be patient and supportive. It is the same basic biological principle as hypostasis. This model argues that it is vital to be mindful and keep in mind the various prejudices and fears all humans harbour—and try to use these feelings to help shape positive relationships with patients under care. The nurse and patient need to come up with what some call a â€Å"shared story.† This is my vision for nursing. This focus on a shared story is very important. The relationship between the patient and the practitioner in a very real sense a developing narrative. In order to live out my philosophy of nursing, every day I must remember this, that a nurse and his or her patient must form a shared story. Those people and professionals who work at a hospital form a family.

Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr Essay The PBS video, â€Å"Malcolm and the Civil Rights Movement† is important in showing the varying views of both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. The video makes it well evident that both men were striving for the same end result, which was â€Å"defeating white racism and empowering African Americans. However, as the video explains, while both men had the same destination in mind, they both sought different journeys to get there. Through an analysis of the PBS video, Martin Luther King Jr.’s â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech, and several passages from The Autobiography of Malcolm X, it can be concluded that while the two men wanted the same thing, they both had different views and beliefs; Malcolm X was angry, bitter and vengeful, while Martin Luther King Jr. was only concerned with fixing the issue at hand. Early in the PBS video, it is explained that while King wished to mend and strengthen a family bond that already existed, Malcolm X viewed himself and black Muslims as an outside party. This is evident through the public denial that Malcolm X was even an American due to his opposing view of the suggestion of â€Å"integration with white America.† (â€Å"Malcolm and the Civil Rights Movement†, The American Experience. PBS. Video Transcript) This belief that Malcolm X was completely angry and against white America is aided though a passage in his autobiography coming from page 292 of the fifteenth chapter. In the first provided passage of Malcom X’s autobiography, Malcolm X shows marked bitterness and hatred in his choice of words to describe the situation. This can best be attributed to the quoting of the his words saying â€Å"the antebellum white slavemaster even devilishly manipulated his own woman.† This phrasing by Malcolm X speaks volumes to how he views the relationship of the white male to the rest of society. Through the using of the word â€Å"devilishly† he is portraying his inner thoughts that the white man is evil and c orrupt in his judgments. Then by using the words and â€Å"manipulated† and â€Å"own†, Malcolm X is expressing his belief that the white man is power hungry and sees the world as a game for his bemusement and handling. Furthermore by saying â€Å"his own woman†, this would suggest that Malcolm X believes that the white slave owner sees himself the master of not only black men but also white females. (Malcolm X, p. 292) To the slave owner, everything but himself is property and assets to be owned and managed. The passage then goes on to explain that Malcolm X strongly holds a general stereotype of slave owners copulating with their slaves to be unquestioned fact about all slave owners. His remarks that the slave owner has conned his wife into letting him procreate with the slaves allows valuable insight into Malcolm X’s thoughts that white male is purely a trickster and untrustworthy. The final two paragraphs of the first passage provided from The Autobiography of Malcolm X offer perhaps the most profound description of Malcolm X’s beliefs surrounding the relationship between blacks and whites. Through the anecdote of the girl traveling all that way to try and make amends for something that not even herself has been proven guilty of showcases how impenetrable Malcolm X’s beliefs are. While the girl asks Malcolm X if he believes â€Å"there are good white people†, Malcolm X explains that only actions can change his thoughts. The girl then offers, â€Å"What can I do?† at which Malcolm X responds that there is nothing she can do (Malcolm X, p. 292). This effectively renders the argument that Malcolm X firmly believes that the previous and current disrespectful actions whites have shown blacks are unforgiving. This belief and anger strongly contradicts with the first part of Martin Luther King Jr.’s â€Å"I Have a Dream† spee ch. Martin Luther King Jr. begins his speech with a preface of â€Å"let us not wallow in the valley of despair,† which he uses to say that the past does not need to define the feelings of the future. King then addresses that by moving on from the past quarrels, brotherhood can be established and the nation’s creed of â€Å"all men are created equal† can be recognized (â€Å"Martin Luther King: I Have a Dream† 1963. Speech). Paralleling this theme of the past not defining the future, King speaks of the state of Mississippi’s current and previous mishaps and how it can change as long as the past is left in the past. In the second provided passage of Malcolm X’s autobiography, which is pages 250 and 251 of the fourteenth chapter, it becomes increasingly clear that Malcolm X does not believe that whites and blacks can live happily on the same level. He then makes a unique distinction between the words segregate and separate. Through a reference to Elijah Mohammed, Malcolm X explains that segregation implies that one side –blacks– are inferior to the other side, while separation suggests that both sides have mutually agreed to part ways and keep distance without one holding significant power or influence over the others. To round out the passage, Malcolm X makes an analogy to a mother and her child stating that unless the baby is separate at birth then both the mother and baby will ultimately die (Malcolm X, p. 250-1). Interestingly, in the third provided passage, which is also found in the fourteenth chapter on pages 260 and 261, Malcolm X makes an interesting comparison of the black people being pets of the white society. This shows that Malcolm X believes that blacks are being trained for the benefit of whites and even mentions the word â€Å"brainwashing† to describe how whites have affected blacks. This passage continues the thought from the second provided passage from earlier in the chapter that blacks should be given the chance to be their own people, away from the influence of white society (Malcolm X, p. 260-1). This analogy suggests that Malcolm X sees the black peoples as independent people that deserve the chance to grow and mature on their own terms. Differing strongly from Malcolm X is King’s speech which showcases his believe that separation is not needed and that he envisions both races coming together as a family. This is illustrated through the line â€Å"black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sister and brothers.† With reference to his reverend background, King makes a suggestion that religion can be a unifying factor for the two races and that â€Å"the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.† (â€Å"Martin Luther King: I Have a Dream†, 1963. Speech) This is in direct contrast to Malcolm X and his autobiography, which puts significant emphasis on his Muslim beliefs being in direct opposition to white society. With the religious tone set, King’s speech then continues to explain how the previous grievances and tragedies of yesterday can be removed for tomorrow beginning with the phrase â€Å"with this faith†. This explains that King was looking to mend fences while Malcolm X saw the situation as â€Å"us versus everyone† and that everyone was out to victimize them. Finishing his speech, King expands the current situation to encompass the hardships of all other situations in the United States. Through this, King is able to offer that uniting of the black and white races can be a foundation for freedom of all parties in the United States. This helps to explain the difference between the views King and Malcolm X most clearly. While Malcolm X believes that unless separation is achieved the two races will destroy each other, King believes that if the two races come together then great achievements and progress in freedom for all can be accomplished. The PBS video then explains that Malcolm X did not want the black Muslim people to viewed as â€Å"defenseless† and thus, he was opposed to a strategy of non-violence (â€Å"Malcolm and the Civil Rights Movement†, The American Experience. PBS. Video Transcript). Because of the differing views on violence, religion was brought into play and Malcolm X insinuated that King was following the white man’s religion and still being controlled by him. While physical violence was avoided by King’s strategy, so was verbal assault as King often avoided criticizing Malcolm X and his comments. The video then explains that Malcolm X’s unique position then became less dominant in his mind as he felt let down from Elijah Muhammad after the death of Ronald Stokes. At the same time Malcolm X was looking to cause physical pain to the other side, King was making legislative and social gains in his movement (â€Å"Malcolm and the Civil Rights Movement†, The American Experience. PBS. Video Transcript). This helps to explain that King largely wanted a fix to the problem, while Malcolm X wanted revenge. It is important to understand how, communication, inclusive learning, functional skills and negotiating with learners can lead to effective learning.Planning teaching and sessions can enable all learners to have the same opportunities to learn equally and will help the teacher to achieve their learning objectives. Negotiating with learners Assessment should be used for teachers as well as learners Life long learning UK (2007) Assessment is a valuable tool for both Teachers and learners to assess how and whether learning has occurred, according to Scales (2008) The principle purpose of assessment is to help people to learn; it should not be about testing people to see at what point they will fail.It is a method of elevating learners to a higher level of learning Everett (2012) Initial assessment occurs at the beginning of the course or precourse to obtain information about the learner’s skills and knowlage to date. Formative assessment helps the teacher to see how learners are progressing before moving on to other topics. It includes the effectiveness of the teaching and learning-taking place. Earlier in the beginnings of Earth’s history climate changes were normally induced by different vibrant processes on Earth but recently it is caused by human activities. Although, all of us are already aware of climate change but still lacking in our activities to stop further increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. For dealing with this present environmental challenge, there is a need to work vigorously for a global agreement to control climate change and to take possible domestic actions to attain satisfying diminutions in our own contribution. Discussion Significance & Scope of the Issue The management of the severe environmental challenge is essential as otherwise it could direct us towards drastic results. Already climate change is responsible for 300,000 deaths a year in accordance to former UN secretary general Kofi Annan’s think tank, the Global Humanitarian Forum.
